Cabana Gențiana

The Story of Cabana Gențiana

From the first beam in 1963 to the ashes of May 2026 — and what comes next.

Origin

High up in the wild heart of the Retezat Mountains, in the Pietrele Valley, a wooden structure was built in 1963 that would become more than just a shelter: Cabana Gențiana.

Situated at an altitude of 1,670 meters, it watched over the flowing stream and offered respite to hikers climbing toward towering peaks or glacial lakes.

Resilience and renewal

Its story was one of resilience. After the 1990s left it nearly forgotten and in disrepair, Gențiana was given a new lease on life in 1998.

Under the care of the „Floarea Reginei" Association, the cabin became a symbol of authentic mountain hospitality — a place without grid electricity, but filled with the warmth of a wood-burning stove and stories told by the light of headlamps. Generations of mountaineers learned respect for the wilderness here, finding a second home within its timber walls.

The night of 8 May 2026

Sadly, its long history of over six decades was abruptly cut short. On the dark night of Friday, 8 May 2026, flames consumed everything.

By morning, all that remained of the place where guitar songs once echoed was a pile of ash and painful memories. The silence that fell over the valley was heavy with mourning.

The road back

But the spirit of Gențiana did not burn away with the wood. The mountain-loving community refused to accept this end.

Today, although the old beams are gone, the intention to rebuild the cabin has become a new rallying point. Gențiana will rise again from its own ashes, remaining the guiding light of the Pietrele Valley for all who feel the calling of the ridges.
